Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat between the pubic line and above the belly button. In many cases, weakened or separated abdominal muscles are also restored during this procedure. This reconstructive technique enables you to achieve a flatter, smoother midsection that may have been difficult to obtain, even with diet and exercise. This procedure is more about contouring the midsection, rather than helping with weight loss in this area.
The tummy tuck surgery is only considered after an initial consultation with Dr. Wells to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. In general, candidates for a tummy tuck are those who suffer from a loose or saggy abdomen due to childbirth, aging, previous surgery, genetics, or major weight loss or fluctuation. The best candidates still have relatively good skin elasticity, are at their ideal weight, and are finished with childbirth.
Before Dr. Wells makes an incision, our board-certified anesthesiologist and surgical nurse will prepare you for surgery and minimize your discomfort by administering intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. A horizontal incision is made low on the abdomen between the pubic line and the belly button. Making the incision low allows for it to be hidden beneath most French-cut underwear.
Like a window shade, the upper portion of abdominal skin is pulled taut. Excess skin is trimmed, and the remaining skin and belly button is sutured into place. In many cases, liposuction may be performed to remove fat from the nearby “love handles.” This provides an overall contoured appearance. Most of our patients are able to recover relatively quickly and return to work a week after surgery.
